Planning the perfect garage sale!

Do you feel like your house is cluttered with stuff? Feel like you belong on Hoarders? Don’t fret there is a solution to help de-clutter your house and earn a few bucks too….. have a garage sale!! Planning a profitable garage sale isn’t impossible, just follow these easy steps and you are well on your way.

  1. Time it Right – Weekends are prime time for garage sales, especially Saturdays (Sundays are typically when people go to church). Make sure to plan the sale when the temperature will be comfortable enough to spend time outside, which in Texas can be difficult sometimes…. Another thing to consider is planning it around the first weekend of the month as that is when many people get paid.
  2. Spread the word – Marketing your yard sale is vital, use local coffee shops, churches, and neighborhood centers to post your information. Another useful resource is of course the internet, sites like yardsalesearch.com and craigslist.com are extremely helpful in getting the word out.
  3. Collaborate with friends and neighbors – Everything is better in groups! Grow the size of your yard sale by inviting friends and neighbors to participate in the festivities, the more items you have will help the amount of traffic you incur.
  4. The price is right – Price your items smart, and not too high. The typical set price should be around 75% off of what you originally paid for the item, of course this is open to fluctuation pending on what you are selling.
  5. Bag it – Hand out bags or baskets for customers to hold items in while they peruse the merchandise. Studies have shown that consumers with bags tend to buy more items!
  6. Don’t Sell Everything – Sure garage sales are good ways to earn cash fast, but some items are better sold elsewhere. Items such as jewelry and some furniture should be researched and appraised before pawned off at a garage sale.
